Story by Yongjian Liu
With 4 proud wins and 4 tough losses, 2015-16 was a memorable season for the Mustangs over 4 months of hard work. “I think out of my 4 seasons here at ISS this has been one of the best,” says Shane Yap, team captain.
Our first win against Waseda was one of the toughest victories out the four, with new teammates and plus it was the first team of the season; we didn’t seem to be affected; instead, we started off hot, and took the lead after the 1st quarter. But we had a problem scoring baskets and were relaxing on defense. Since we were a little bit too comfortable on the lead, the opponent came back fast and it was back to a close game as 4th quarter started. Both of us and the opponent fought hard to get the first win, with much more intense defense. We managed to cause some turnovers from them and turned them into some easy points on fast break; so we got the win with 29 – 27, as we fought harder than them.
The toughest loss was not the one for Bronze medal; it was a loss against the undefeated team – ICS; even though we lost by 12 points at the end, we fought hard from the beginning second of the game till the last. Coach Bell said, “Out of all the teams that ICS has played, we were the closest team to beat them.”
It was a season that everyone in the team enjoyed, a season that everybody was proud of!
How did we improve during the season?
Every loss shows us what we are struggling with; it could have be defending, passing or scoring, but for us overall, it was rebounding, and this is caused from our mentality. In a game, controlling defensive rebounds is an important thing to do, because if you are doing it well, you are preventing your opponent from getting a second chance on scoring. But we didn’t do well on this all season which gave our opponents some second chance baskets, and it was an important factor that affected the scores on the scoreboard. Even though rebounding has been a big issue for us, we kept working on boxing out in training as the season processed, and hard work pays off. We had much better rebounding skills at the end of the season than what we had at the beginning. This all came from us, everyone of us. Coach push us hard in trainings so that we are always competitive, and being competitive always brings you more energy to play hard in the game.
What a game!!! We were the GUEST.
As a team, we look forward to work hard together and come back strong in the league; as in individual, every one of us look forward to improve what we are capable of doing right now, and contribute as much as we can to the team.
We look forward to be united, to be a TEAM that overcome any challenges we face, and be strong together. Go Mustangs!
