“Team on 3. 1, 2, 3, TEAM!!”
One of the most popular sports, basketball is being loved by many students in ISS, and the basketball season has started in October 2015. More than 25 boys were waiting for the tryouts before the season starts; however, there were only 10 girls who waited to join a girls basketball team.
Surprisingly, the English and Grade 9.2 homeroom teacher, Ms.Loughman, was coming to the basketball court to coach the team. She had been playing basketball since she was 9 years old, and she was very excited to coach the girls, both because she had never coached before and coaching was one of the reasons why she decided to start teaching. Ivy, a member, stated, “I was surprised at first when I found out that Ms. Loughman was coaching basketball.”
Out of the 10 girls, a majority of them had only played basketball in PE, and some had never thought about basketball becoming their passion. There were only a few members of the team that had experience playing on teams before. At first, basketball wasn’t easy for the girls. They were just sitting on the bench if there was a break time, some were being lazy, and some got very depressed that they could not shoot or make goals. But amazingly, even though they didn’t win a single game at all, they were becoming stronger and stronger. After every game, the girls became more and more passionate and started to love basketball. After a while, there was no one that just hung around during the break, but everyone kept practicing and trying with basketballs. The girls just did what they could do. Practice, and practice. The girls were on the right track.
On the last game with NPS, there was no one who didn’t try their best. Every girl has improved a lot and they had confidence, and they were staying ‘hungry’-which always worked as their motto. When the game started with the buzzer sound, players were running as much as possible, the other were waiting and cheering the players. The whole team was committing themselves to win the game. It was proved when Ms.Loughman asked the girls who is ready for the game, everyone showed their aggressiveness and confidence. Even though all of the players did their best, they lost the game with a score of 48-13. The girls were not disappointed or dispirited but very happy and satisfied with their accomplishment and developed skills. Ms.Loughman was both proud and inspired by the girls on the court. She stated, “But then I turned around, and I saw all of the players on the bench and they were still cheering on their teammates and they did not quit. And I was really inspired by their positivity. So by the end of the season, even though we never won a game, we came pretty close in our last game and I could see the hunger in the players’ eyes.”
Ela, the team captain who has played for about 6 to 7 years, said, “Basketball is the only way where I can let out my frustration and thoughts while playing competitively and fairly. Though we haven’t won any matches, I’m still glad about the team. I love my teammates, they were all so positive, passionate and hardworking people.” She has led the team into a big progress and refused to give up the whole time.
Although the girls did not win every game, the basketball season was still a success. The members learned new skills, became more confident, and more hungry. The members also made comments about whether they would join the team next year, and 9 out of 10 members said yes. Anizza said, “Hopefully the coach will be as good as Ms.Loughman since she’s awesome.”
