Soccer is a sport nearly everyone shows an interest in. As most of us know, 11 players from each team compete against another with the ball using only our feet, except for the goalkeepers. Soccer is a strategic sport where players change the formations or technique situationally. Each game is 90 minutes long. 45 minutes for the first half, and another 45 minutes for the second half. However it is only applied to professional players. For high school student, usually we only play 70 mins in total. Also, there is no limit to player substitution, while there are only 3 chances to substitute players in a professional games.

The first sport season of ISS started on August 22nd, and ended on November 7th. Students from grades 9 to 12 were given an opportunity to try out to join the soccer team. There were 25 people at tryout for the boys’ team. Only 16 out of 25 people made it to join the team. Below are the names of the chosen players;

Grade 12: Kojima

Grade 11: Alejandro, Kaiping, Kida, Ryuma, Eric, Kunwoo, Gabriel

Grade 10: Taegyun, Minchan, Minseong, Rodolfo, Yuya

Grade 9: Donglin, Toby, Alexander

There were totally 7 games during the season. Our results were 1 win, 1 tie and 5 losses. We ended our season in 5th place, which means we could go to the play-off and had a game with a school at 6th place. Our opponent in the play-off was Nexus International School. We won the game. Through the games, the players learned a lot about teamwork and perseverance. Despite ending off the season without satisfactory results, players did not complain one another but cheered up one another.

One thing that disappointed us was that there were so many problems with some of the games. By right, we were supposed to play 40 minutes for our first half and 40 minutes for our second half. However, during three games out of seven games, we only played 35 minutes for the whole game due to a problem with referee.

The most impressive game was a game with Nexus. Nexus was the only team we won against. In addition, in the play-off, we met Nexus again and beat them again. We won Nexus by 3-2 for the first meet. However, in play-off, we beat them by 5-0. It was a great progression to our team. And we were happy to finish the season with the winning in play-off.

During the season, we had some conflicts with the coach. Our coach wanted to give the same opportunities to every player, but some good players wanted to play only themselves for winning. Due to those conflicts, we lost a lot of matches that we could’ve won. However, I think that the overall season was very enjoyable as everyone learned a lot of new things and learned new ways of thinking on the field. I am looking forward next year’s season!
